Child Restraint Design Optimization Using Simulation Tools

Dorel is a major player in the industry of juvenile products including CRS, strollers, high chair, baby bottles ... Child Restraint System and strollers represent main activities in this business.

Two different examples of structure optimisations will be presented in this paper.

In a first subject, starting from an existing carry cot  architecture, topologic optimisation was used with a two steps approach. The structure was optimised taking into account a frontal impact loading with a 12 month CRABI dummy. After linearization of this dynamic loading condition, the existing structure was first reinforced by means of internal ribs. Then, additional parts were optimised to finalize the design.

The second subject deals with the optimisation of a stroller design. This product is subjected to various type of loading coming from juvenile standard or from internal qualification test. With the main target of weight reduction, different techniques were applied to reach the final design.
