Numerical Simulation of Ship-Induced Waves in Inland Waterways, with RADIOSS

The Royal Navy's two new aircraft carriers (CVF) will replace the existing three Invincible Class carriers in 2015 and 2018 respectively. Their role is to be a Joint Defence asset, with the primary purpose of providing the UK with an expeditionary offensive air capability, which has the flexibility to operate the largest possible range of aircraft in the widest possible range of roles.

The CVF is 280m long and of all steel construction, with a design life in excess of 30 years. Each ship is equipped to accommodate and handle up to 40 aircraft (20 within the hangar), including the Joint Strike Fighter. Propulsion is provided by electric motors driving twin shafts and propellers. Power is produced by Diesel generator and Gas Turbine alternator sets. Each ship is equipped to accommodate 1,400 crew in modularised cabins and extensive medical facilities.

The CVF programme is being managed by an 'Alliance' of UK organisations, known as the Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA).

  • BAE Systems Surface Ships Limited
  • Babcock Marine
  • The UK MOD

The ship structure is being designed to meet the standards of Lloyd's Register Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Naval Ships and upon completion the vessels will be entered into Lloyd's Class. The two ships will be built in blocks at a number of sites around the UK and assembled in a dry-dock at Rosyth Dockyard.
