FEM Simulation of a Composite Material Monocoque Under Impact Loading using HyperWorks Radioss Block Solver

Composite materials crashworthiness poses significant challenges, when compared to traditional steel and aluminium technologies; failure usually occurs through peculiar mechanisms, such as intralaminar fiber/matrix breakage or interlaminar delamination and crushing phenomena, depending on loading conditions and features of the structure.

The characterization of fabric GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers) and CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers) in the non-linear field plays a crucial role in order to achieve a sufficient prediction capability of the numerical model during crash events; a case study addressing FEM structural analysis of a composite material monocoque subjected to side impact loading and related correlation with experimental results will be displayed, including an overview of Radioss Block materials and properties adopted for the generation of the FEM model.
