Topology and shape optimization versus traditional optimization methods

In a traditional design procedure optimization is performed in the final stage of the development process to meet requirements like material strength and certain boundary conditions. Consequently the variety of alternative design concepts is limited and the optimum design is often missed.

The scope of this presentation is to show an optimization process including topology and shape optimization techniques in comparison to traditional optimization strategies. Using the example of simplified 2D structures the variety of alternative design procedures are demonstrated.
