Technical Seminars, June 24th 2014

The 2014 conference seminars covered relevant industry topics and highlight customer case studies in each area. All seminars will have a high level of interaction. All three technical seminars took place on Tuesday June 24th, 2014.

Seminar 1: Altair OptiStruct for Non-Linear Analysis and Optimization
OptiStruct constantly increases the amount of capabilities for non-linear analysis and optimization. While small displacement analysis is well established since quite a while, the latest version of OptiStruct also provides fully integrated capabilities for large displacement analysis. The workshop, conducted by the lead development staff for OptiStruct, will explain the new options in OptiStruct 13.0 for a broad set of non-linear analysis, the theoretical background and how to use the new options most efficiently.

Seminar topics:
  • Overview of non-linear applications in OptiStruct
  • Available elements and materials for non-linear analysis
  • Contact formulations
  • Available analysis sequences
  • Solver setting and output options
  • Zooming and sub-modeling
  • Customization / process integration
  • Maximize the performance of OptiStruct, parallel computing
  • Optimization for non-linear analysis

Seminar 2: Predicting Acoustic Behavior with Altair HyperWorks
Predicting acoustic behavior is getting increasingly important from a comfort as well as an environmental impact perspective. Altair HyperWorks provides a very broad set of capabilities to predict structural and fluid borne noise with a high level of accuracy and performance. The seminar will highlight fundamentals of noise sources and the theoretical background how to solve different phenomena. Additionally the Seminar will discuss some real world applications and explain how to set them up in the most efficient way within the HyperWorks environment.

Seminar topics:
  • Theoretical background on noise and vibrations (structure and fluid)
  • How to select the most efficient method
  • Setting up real world problems
  • Coupled fluid and structural borne noise simulation
  • Possibilities to optimize the noise and vibrations behavior

Seminar 3: Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO)
HyperWorks Based Solution (An Engineer’s Approach)

As products increase in complexity, design becomes more multi-disciplinary and the requirement to efficiently deploy Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO) technology becomes a significant process differentiator. Increasingly, industry is successfully performing MDO studies to achieve optimized balanced design allowing trade-offs between mass, attribute performance and even cost. In order to impact the product development process, MDO results must deliver to project milestones and in order to achieve this, a number of challenges need to be overcome.

Typical challenges consist of model set-up time, efficient turn-around time which ensures optimum use of limited hardware and software resources. Altair with its expertise in model manipulation, large dataflow, job submittal and optimization & visualization technologies, has leveraged HyperWorks to meet these challenges. The seminar will showcase a HyperWorks based, dedicated MDO tool (i.e. multi-model synchronization, rapid design variable & responses specification), different MDO processes (i.e. iterative i-MDO and automatic a-MDO), efficient optimization strategies for large problems which include crash, NVH and durability load cases (i.e. multiple crash load cases) and efficient post-processing.

The workshop will present the strategy on the development of the MDO tool and highlights unique functionality using simple functional test examples. A large scale industrial application, automotive Body-in-White structure (i.e. large amount of design variables with many non-linear crash loadcases) is presented to demonstrate the MDO challenges. The strategy and subsequent processes developed can be applied to other industrial sectors including the aerospace sector.

Who should attend?
This technical seminar is aimed at a wide audience from CAE Engineers with an interest in Optimization and MDO together with CAE Managers and Strategists who wish to understand how the technology could be integrated into an established design process to meet the weight, performance, cost balance.

Seminar topics:
  • Overview of MDO & Challenges
  • Optimization Technology Review
  • Meeting the Challenges – Model Set-up
  • Meeting the Challenges – Optimization Technologies
  • Meeting the Challenges – Post Processing
  • Live i-MDO Demo – BIW
  • Live a-MDO Demo – BIW
