Weight optimization strategy combining linear and nonlinear (crash) load cases

Weight optimization is key today in our products.  If optimization methods (topology, size,…) are used more and more for linear analysis (maximum stress, modal analysis), applying them to nonlinear cases and especially to crash load cases is a more complex challenge.

The paper presents an optimization case performed on a seat, combining linear modal analysis loadcases together with crash load cases using manual linearization as well as Equivalent Static Load Method.

This study shows the very interesting insight that this combined approach can give into the design as well as the current limitations of the approach within the Hyperworks Tool Suite.
