Recent Enhancements for Composite Design Optimization

Composite material offers unmatched design and manufacturing flexibility. The increased complexity also presents new challenges for engineering design and manufacturing. In recently years the authors have developed a comprehensive optimization process for composite laminate structures in OptiStruct, leading the design from concept to ply-book details. This process has gained increasing usage in designing a wide range of products including race cars and next generation airliners at major aerospace OEMs. This paper will review the overall design process and addresses recent enhancements including: (1) ply drop-off constraints required by many applications for achieving a smooth ply thickness blending; (2) zone-based Free-Size pattern grouping; (3) more flexible manufacturing constraints definitions; (4) OSSmooth capability for ply shape interpretation and smoothing.
