Body Structure and Chassis Optimization for Improving Driving Maneuvers

Proper investigation of the effects of structural stiffness on the dynamic behavior of vehicles require coupling of finite element analysis (FEA) and multi-body systems simulations (MBS). Currently, coupling is generally conducted manually and therefore not suited for large process optimizations. In this work a methodology for automated coupling of FEA and MBS is proposed, thus enabling multi-disciplinary design optimization (MDO) of vehicle dynamics and weight. This approach comprises following steps:

  • Selection of design variables & parameterization of CAE models

  • In-the-loop generation and calculation of FE & MBS models

  • Data mining and meta-modelling based on CAE output

  • MDO

The viability of the coupling approach and the associated optimization potential will be demonstrated using a set of critical driving maneuvers.
