Composite Optimisation of the S-Works + McLaren Venge

"Formula one is a fast paced sport where a small advantage can mean the difference between winning and losing. Composite Optimisation technology has become an integral part of the design process and is used extensively on the McLaren MP4/26A car. McLaren Applied Technology Limited was created to exploit the design and development experience of McLaren Racing Limited and commercialise the experience developed in the racing environment especially in the use of Composite material and data acquisition and management. One of the many and varied projects undertaken was a joint venture with Specialized Bicycle Corporation which uses the design and manufacturing experience of McLaren to produce lightweight aerodynamic Road bicycle.

This presentation looks at the optimisation process involved in developing a composite laminate for the S-Works + McLaren Venge. For this work OptiStruct 11.0 is used along with and a newly developed HyperMesh Composite Optimisation Setup tool, CompOpt, and developed in close association between McLaren Racing and Altair UK. This tool reduces the burden of setting up composite optimisation detailed sizing studies. The Optimisation study uses Free Sizing optimisation to identify potentially efficient ply shapes. The detailed sizing section uses a PCOMPP definition of a laminate, which includes material draping."
